Knob Powell acted on the radio with Jeff Chandler and are amazed by the young star. Chandler after recalled, “It absolutely was Knob whom required so you can Columbia and you will advised anyone who pay attention, ‘This kid should really be in the images.’ That manager ultimately kinda provided your a look and this said: ‘All proper you , we will set him inside the your own personal.’ That will be how i stumbled on play a casino player from inside the a card playing sequence.” [ 6 ]
Vital lobby
Kine Per week told you “The fresh powerful ‘crooks slide out’ are peopled which have a colourful range out-of essential and arresting emails, that, skilfully controlled because of the writer and you will director, permit the motion picture so you can tread liquid efficiently. It is just to the become this actually starts to fall apart, nevertheless smack-right up finale rescues it on the ‘red’. Excellently staged and you will wisely dialogued, it will have no great difficulty when you look at the lifestyle down the incredibly unappealing name.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Motion picture Bulletin told you “The movie actions on a fast rate, the new dialogue was slick and you will characterisations generally energetic. Cock Powell and you can Evelyn Keyes lead the latest shed professionally, as the detective try played with considerable aplomb by the that person personality, Lee J. Cobb.” [ nine ]
Richard Brody from the New Yorker listed “Which terse and you can tight motion picture noir try centered on the latest personal and you will elite conflicts of your title reputation, the latest unlawful genius (starred by Knob Powell) about a sophisticated unlawful gambling establishment. This new film’s writer and you will movie director, Robert Rossen, sets up good multidimensional chess online game, for mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, their workplace (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Received), an excellent cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may an effective scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sibling (Nina Foch) has worked from the gambling enterprise and you may old a good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). Brand new caustically epigrammatic script, new cast’s suavely controlled body language out-of love and you will hazard, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and stylishly assertive images (plus their governmental conscience) make this pugnacious yet , outlined spectacle a low profile classic of your category.” [ ten ]
Variety provided the movie kudos, writing, “It is a sensible whodunit, which have focus on scripting, casting and you will camerawork lifting they above the average. Image features actions and you can suspense, and you can specific small suits away from laughs to incorporate taste. Ace performances because of the Knob Powell, as a betting home overseer, and Lee J. Cobb, due to the fact a police inspector, in addition to in the score . Although the spot comes after a familiar pattern, this new characterizations is actually new as well as the shows sufficient so you’re able to overbalance. Dialog was terse and topical, steering clear of the psychological, phoney touching. Strange camera basics appear occasionally to escalate desire and temporarily arrest the interest. Good teamplay from the Robert Rossen, increasing since the manager-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, brand new copywriter and you can associate manufacturer, plus helps with making this a delicate production.” [ 11 ]
Motion picture critic Bosley Crowther offered the film a combined comment, criticizing it having slow pacing, writing, “But the slowness and you will general dilemma of area for a couple of-thirds of one’s film will not make for renowned adventure, while the shallowness of one’s mystery about that has creating all the brand new killing relieves it of every higher suspense. Its primarily a matter of watching Mr. Powell read his paces fashionably if you are an enormous cast off stars and you may stars promote him traditional help. Evelyn Keyes plays the favorable nothing lady exactly who brings forth the best in your and Ellen Received is the sleek and you can slinky vixen just who will get your on jams. Thomas Gomez is oily as villain and Lee J. Cobb do another type of ready tour because a tired cops inspector who finally closes the outcome. A great deal of consuming and you will puffing is carried out from the the worried.” [ 12 ]
Philp French, composing about Observer told you: “This hardly revealed movie noir ‘s the cool, regulated directorial debut of the remaining-wing author exactly who went on and also make like classics while the All of the this new King’s Men therefore the Hustler .” [ 13 ]
